AI gold rush widens wealth gap, Menlo Ventures partner says

Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das warns a social post that the recent AI boom has concentrated retirement — scale wealth in a small cohort while triggering widespread job churn and career uncertainty for many engineers.

Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das published a lengthy social post on May 16, 2026 (1:17 PM PDT) warning that the current AI boom has produced extreme divergence between a small group of big winners and a much larger cohort left behind. He described San Francisco as "pretty frenetic" and argued the split between winners and everyone else is the worst he has seen, signaling a shift that matters for careers, recruitment and company strategy across the industry.

To illustrate the scale, Das offered a "back of the envelope AI calculation" he said captures the past five years: roughly 10,000 people — founders and employees at companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, NVIDIA and, he noted, "Meta TBD" — have reached retirement wealth well above $20 million. That math, he suggested, shows how concentrated the upside has been for a relatively tiny slice of the workforce.

At the same time, Das highlighted persistent labor upheaval. Layoffs, he wrote, are "in full swing," and many software engineers increasingly feel their core skill set is becoming less useful. He contrasted those who have received large windfalls with a far larger group who may enjoy well-paying jobs but fear they will never approach the same scale of wealth — holding roles that pay "but<$500k" over the course of a career and thus missing the outsized outcomes available to a few.

The post prompted rapid reaction on X. Entrepreneur Deva Hazarika countered that many people Das described are "incredibly fortunate and can simply make a choice to be happy," a response that prompted some eye-rolling among readers. Another commenter characterized the cycle as "pretty damn novel & also kinda nasty," arguing the same technology can be both "the lottery ticket & the thing eating your fallback." Those responses underscore the conflicting emotions industry workers and observers feel about rapid disruption and concentrated rewards.

Das framed the combination of concentrated gains and widespread churn as producing confusion over career choices and "a deep malaise about work (and its future)." For builders, investors and talent teams, he said, this mix alters incentives around retention, hiring and long-term career planning at AI-focused companies — complicating decisions about compensation structure, equity allocation and the paths that might lead employees into the small group that captures outsized returns.
