Anthropic opens Claude Design research preview to paid Claude subscribers

Anthropic has opened Claude Design in a research preview for paid Claude subscribers, available at a separate entry point: Claude.ai/design. The preview is included at no additional charge but enforces highly restrictive weekly usage caps. A May 5, 2026 article by Miguel Rebelo framed the release as a tool to help users reach first drafts faster by generating design artifacts with AI.

Claude Design runs as a chat-driven agent connected to a virtual project workspace. When a user asks the agent to build a mobile dashboard, landing page, or slide deck, the system assembles assets and saves them to that workspace. Outputs appear in an integrated interactive preview where elements can be tweaked or annotated before the user prompts the agent again, and both generated and uploaded files are organized for review and download.

The workspace explicitly saves concrete file types — for example, SVG files, pasted image references, and full HTML and CSS-and surfaces a design — system workflow. Initial configuration invites users to link a GitHub repository, upload local files, reference a Figma file, and add fonts or images. After roughly five minutes the product returns a detailed inventory of design elements plus dozens of files intended for manual review.

Review and approval are manual: Claude presents generated system artifacts and the user upvotes to accept or downvotes to request alternatives. Once a set of colors, typography, components and UI kits is approved, that design system can be reused across projects. Anthropic warns that each design — system generation consumes part of the weekly token allowance, so teams can create multiple systems but must remain mindful of usage limits.

Builders are offered multiple starting points — a prototype, a slide deck, or a saved template — and may select an existing design system or begin from scratch with wireframes or high-fidelity mockups. The workspace includes a sketch tool and accepts a variety of inputs: uploaded images,.docx/.pptx/.pdf documents,.fig Figma files, voice input, and a web capture tool that is noted as useful but somewhat fiddly. Claude Design also includes a Claude Code handoff intended to translate generated designs into buildable code, positioning the product for rapid prototyping and early — stage iteration. That handoff increases the tool’s utility for moving ideas toward implementation, even as the research — preview usage caps limit sustained production work.
