Cognition Raises More Than $1 Billion, Valuation Tops $26 Billion: why it matters for developers

Cognition announced on May 27, 2026 that it has secured financing of more than $1 billion, valuing the company north of $26 billion — up from an approximately $10 billion valuation following a $400 million raise in September 2025. The new round was led by Lux Capital, General Catalyst and 8VC, with participation from Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital. The funding gives Cognition additional capital to expand enterprise deployments of its AI coding agent, Devin.

Cognition says Devin has driven tenfold enterprise usage growth this year and helped the company reach about $492 million in annualized revenue. Weekly Devin sessions have surged since March 2026, the company reports. Cognition describes its approach as model‑agnostic, recently releasing its own model, SWE‑1.6, and says Devin now writes roughly 89% of the company’s code, up from 13% in December 2025. SWE‑Agent is noted as an open‑source alternative.

The size of the round underscores strong investor appetite for AI coding agents even as their practical value remains contested. Coverage of the financing highlights ongoing debate: some backers are pouring capital into the space, while critics question long‑term benefits — developer George Hotz is quoted calling AI agents “the most costly mistakes” in software development history.

Cognition’s reported revenue and usage gains position the company to accelerate enterprise rollouts; it lists clients that include Citi, Mercedes‑Benz, Goldman Sachs, Dell and the U.S. military. At the same time, the rapid shift toward machine‑written internal code raises governance, reliability and oversight questions as market skepticism persists.
