Databricks and SAP push Semantic Metadata into Unity Catalog to make SAP data AI-ready

Databricks announced the general availability of a capability that automatically synchronizes semantic metadata from SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP BDC) into Databricks Unity Catalog. For mounted SAP BDC Delta Shares, semantic metadata is shared into Unity Catalog at the table level when a table is accessed, so users encountering SAP tables in Databricks see business — friendly display names and descriptions rather than only raw SAP identifiers.

The integration builds on SAP Business Data Cloud Connect to Databricks (BDC Connect) and leverages Delta Sharing to publish governed SAP data products into the Databricks platform. Semantic metadata synchronized into Unity Catalog includes column descriptions and explicit table relationships such as Primary and Foreign Keys, while SAP BDC remains the single source of truth for that metadata so changes made in SAP BDC are reflected in Unity Catalog.

Beyond human readability, the synchronization targets practical AI and analytics use cases inside Databricks. Databricks says the added business context helps the Databricks AI Assistant and AI/BI Genie produce more accurate, join-ready queries and to answer natural — language questions that depend on SAP domain semantics. By providing explicit semantic maps-for example, how a sales order table relates to a sales order item table — AI-assisted workflows can avoid guessing relationships from opaque SAP table and column codes.

Governance signals are also part of the sync. SAP BDC propagates governance tags from the PersonalData namespace as system — governed tags on tables in Unity Catalog, enabling data classification signals that inform compliance and access — control decisions. The source material links this capability to fine-grained access control patterns such as attribute — based access control (ABAC) and notes that tags arrive automatically rather than requiring manual tagging work.

For data engineers, analysts and AI practitioners, the change aims to reduce time spent on manual metadata mapping that often lives in spreadsheets, internal documentation, or tribal knowledge. With semantic metadata and governance attached to SAP data products in Unity Catalog, teams should be able to discover, combine and operationalize SAP-backed analytics and AI workflows alongside other enterprise sources without recreating business context or governance in a separate system.

The published material includes documentation links for the Delta Sharing Connector for SAP across cloud providers and for SAP-related Databricks documentation, which users can consult for implementation details. The source does not include customer adoption metrics, performance measurements, or independent security assessments, so organizations evaluating the capability will need to consult the documentation and run their own validation as part of deployment and governance reviews.
