Digg Relaunches as AI-Focused Aggregator That Mines X for Engagement

Kevin Rose shared a link to a redesigned Digg on May 8, 2026, marking the platform’s latest relaunch as an AI-focused news aggregator that pulls engagement signals from X in real time. The company tells beta testers its aim is to “track the most influential voices in a space” and surface the news worth “paying attention to,” positioning the preview as an early, raw test rather than a full public launch. That focus matters because Digg plans to chart conversation cascades on X and highlight which posts and people are driving attention in AI.

The relaunch follows a March shutdown of Digg’s prior reboot, which itself had launched months earlier but floundered amid bot traffic problems and insufficient differentiation. Those issues prompted layoffs and a return to the drawing board; Rose returned to the company full time in April to lead the new effort.

The rebuilt site explicitly tests a news-ranking concept within the AI vertical. Digg’s homepage centers four headline slots — the most viewed story, a rising — discussion item, the fastest — climbing piece, and an “In case you missed it” pick-followed by a ranked daily list with engagement metrics such as views, comments, likes and saves. The team cautioned testers that the preview is “buggy,” and framed the rollout as a first look at how the ranking model behaves.

Crucially, Digg’s metrics are not generated from on-site activity; instead the service ingests content from X in real time and applies sentiment analysis, clustering and signal — detection to surface what appears to matter on that platform. Beyond individual stories, the site builds entity leaderboards — a top 1,000 list for people involved in AI plus rankings for leading companies and politicians focused on AI issues.

The product team pointed to engagement cascades as a core signal: examples include instances where OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s interaction with a story triggers broad discussion and propagation that Digg can chart and surface. That detection model underpins the site’s premise that attention on X can be mined to identify emergent narratives and influential actors in the AI conversation.

The pivot also reflects a tactical shift away from a previous Reddit — like design that struggled to control bot traffic and to distinguish itself. Digg’s team reasons that AI remains a vertical where discussion still concentrates on X, whereas other topics have fragmented across rival platforms and private channels after Twitter’s ownership changes and the rise of alternatives such as Meta’s Threads.

For builders and data-focused users, Digg offers charts and clustering tools to observe how narratives spread on X. The product currently lacks on-site discussion, and it remains unclear whether general audiences will prefer Digg over news apps, RSS readers or their X feeds. If the relaunch gains traction, it could redirect referral traffic to publishers already coping with Google algorithm shifts and the effects of Google’s AI Overviews.
