Gemini app overhauled with agentic features, new models and cinematic video tools

On May 19, 2026, a post by Josh Woodward outlined a major Gemini app redesign that expands proactive agents, introduces new models (Gemini 3.5 Flash and multimodal Gemini Omni) and adds cinematic video generation and fresh UI elements.

On May 19, 2026, Josh Woodward detailed a broad redesign and feature expansion for the Gemini app, positioning it as a more proactive, always — available assistant. The post highlighted rapid user growth — from roughly 400 million monthly users at Google I/O last year to more than 900 million people today across 230 countries and over 70 languages — and framed the release as the next phase in scaling assistant capabilities and responsiveness.

The interface has been reimagined under a new design language called Neural Expressive, which layers fluid animations, vivid colors, updated typography and haptic feedback to make interactions feel more dynamic. Gemini Live is integrated into the new UI so users can move smoothly between quick prompts and extended conversations; the team also re-engineered the microphone to avoid cutting users off mid-thought and plans to add regional dialects soon. Neural Expressive promises richer, real‑time responses that incorporate composed imagery, interactive timelines, narrated video and dynamic graphics, and is rolling out globally today on web, Android and iOS.

Two model — level advances arrive alongside the UI changes. Gemini 3.5 Flash is presented as the first of the next-generation family, combining frontier intelligence with faster action. Gemini Omni is a multimodal model that converts text, image and video prompts into high-quality cinematic video outputs and supports editing via conversational prompts — cinematic zooms and background swaps are called out as examples. Omni also offers one-tap built — in templates, camera — roll uploads and custom AI avatars, and will begin rolling out today to Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers worldwide.

The update expands Gemini’s agent capabilities. Daily Brief is an opt-in morning digest agent, built on the CC Labs experiment, that aggregates urgent Gmail items, upcoming Calendar events and follow — up details into a skimmable briefing. Gemini Spark is positioned as a 24/7 personal agent that can proactively manage tasks under user direction. The team said the Mac desktop app will integrate Gemini Spark so the agent can operate on the local machine and will add more powerful voice features, signaling a push toward continuous background assistance tied to users’ connected apps.

For builders and creators, the changes carry concrete implications: richer multimodal inputs and cinematic outputs are likely to reshape content workflows and lower the barrier to polished video production; subscription gating for Omni means access will vary by tier; and Spark’s local Mac integration suggests increased on-device compute and different privacy and integration trade — offs when agents run in the background. Developers should also expect evolving UI primitives from Neural Expressive and growing demand for multimodal tooling as the rollout continues.
