Google Photos has introduced Auto frame, a generative AI feature that changes the perspective of existing photos after they have already been taken. The tool can transform a flat 2D image into a more dynamic scene by extending the frame and reconstructing missing visual context.
The feature was presented on April 22, 2026, and is associated with work by Google DeepMind specialists Marcos Seefelder and Pedro Velez. Its main promise is to give users more creative control over composition without requiring a new shot or manual editing skills.
Auto frame is designed for cases where the original photo is too tightly cropped, poorly angled, or visually static. By estimating depth and surrounding context, the model can suggest a new viewpoint and make the image feel closer to a short cinematic scene.
For Google Photos, this continues a broader move toward AI-assisted editing that goes beyond filters and basic retouching. The product is increasingly becoming a workspace where users can reinterpret old media, improve framing, and prepare more expressive visual content directly inside the app.
