Greg Brockman Officially Takes Charge of OpenAI's Product Strategy: what changed

OpenAI has formalized a product reorganization that places cofounder Greg Brockman in charge of a unified product group covering ChatGPT, Codex and developer — facing APIs.

Greg Brockman has been named the official head of OpenAI’s product strategy, moving from an interim assignment to a permanent role while retaining oversight of the company’s AI infrastructure. The change consolidates teams that support ChatGPT, the Codex coding agent, and developer — facing APIs into a single product group — a structural shift meant to accelerate development of autonomous capabilities and simplify how products are built and delivered.

Brockman had been filling the position during the medical leave of Fidji Simo, the company’s CEO of AGI deployment; OpenAI says the arrangement is now formal. Simo remains on medical leave and worked with Brockman on the reorganization, which the company presented to staff as a way to centralize decision — making on product priorities and execution. As part of the consolidation, OpenAI plans to unify ChatGPT and Codex into a single experience. The company says Codex is increasingly powering both consumer and enterprise offerings and enabling products to perform digital tasks autonomously on users’ behalf — a capability the firm describes as central to its next wave of agentic features.

Several executive moves accompany the structural change. Thibault Sottiaux, previously head of Codex, will lead OpenAI’s core product and platform teams and is a lead on the firm’s planned “super app,” an initiative intended to combine Codex, ChatGPT and the Atlas browser. Nick Turley, who guided ChatGPT to more than 900 million weekly active users, will shift to head enterprise products, while Ashley Alexander will assume responsibility for consumer product work.

Company leaders positioned the reorganization as a way to “execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future,” signaling a push for more autonomous features across developer integrations and end-user products. The reshuffle comes as OpenAI seeks to simplify its offerings ahead of an expected IPO filing later this year and amid rising competition in coding and conversational AI from firms such as Anthropic and Google.

The announcement follows a series of recent leadership changes: other executives departed in the prior month, including Kevin Weil, Bill Peebles and Srinivas Narayanan. OpenAI updated reporting on these role changes on 5/15/26. The new structure centralizes product decision — making and places several platform and app initiatives under a narrower executive set, a reconfiguration that has concrete implications for developers building on Codex and the company’s APIs.
