OpenAI is losing two key figures, Kevin Wail and Bill Peebles, in light of the company's shift in strategy, which is now focused on corporate AI solutions.
OpenAI is losing two architects of its most ambitious projects. On Friday, Kevin Wail, who led the company's research initiative in science, and Bill Peebles, responsible for the AI video tool Sora, announced their resignations amid cutbacks in consumer-facing areas such as Sora and OpenAI For Science.
Recently, Sora was shut down due to losses of a million dollars a day caused by high computational costs. The OpenAI research group in science, which was behind the Prism platform, has also been absorbed by other teams, signaling a reevaluation of the company's strategy.
Wail's departure came amid a scandal surrounding claims that GPT-5 had allegedly solved ten previously unsolved mathematical problems, which was soon debunked by experts. Peebles, for his part, noted that Sora had contributed significant investments to the video industry, emphasizing the need for experimental directions outside the company's core efforts.
The company is also losing its senior technical director for corporate applications, Srinivasan Narayanan, who reportedly left to spend more time with his family. These changes reflect OpenAI's desire to focus on more sustainable business models and innovations, which may impact the company's competitiveness among other industry leaders.
