Launching XChat on iOS: rejection of the super app strategy and questions about the security of the new messenger

On Friday, the X ecosystem officially launched the standalone messaging application XChat onto the mass market, debuting on mobile devices running the iOS operating system. This new software product physically moves basic communication functions beyond the familiar interface of the parent social network. XChat allows users to directly connect with their contacts from the X platform, offering full functionality for text messaging, file transfer, audio and video calls, and the creation of group chats.

The separation of the messenger into a standalone product demonstrates a radical reassessment of owner Elon Musk's original product strategy. For a long time, the concept of creating a universal "app for everything" was promoted, which was intended to be a single point of access for messaging, payment services, creator content, online shopping, and AI-based tools. Now, the corporate structure, in which xAI (owned by another Musk company, SpaceX) owns the X social network, is betting on an expanded multi-app ecosystem. Instead of concentrating all functions in one place, users are offered a set of separate applications, which should increase the number of touchpoints between the audience and the services.

The technical foundation of the new messenger is built around promoting enhanced privacy features and extended user control over their own digital footprint. At launch, XChat offers a range of specialized tools, including the ability to edit or completely delete messages for all participants in a conversation, support for disappearing texts, and a screen capture blocking function. The developers particularly emphasize that the application is completely free of advertising integrations and hidden user activity tracking mechanisms. Furthermore, the company officially states that all transmitted data is protected by end-to-end encryption algorithms and additionally secured by personal PIN code access.

Despite grand claims about data security, independent cybersecurity experts had previously questioned the company's official assertions regarding the reliability of the cryptographic standards used. Even during XChat's early announcement phase, relevant specialists warned potential users that the new service appeared less secure than industry-proven encrypted messengers like Signal. With the full launch of the application to the broad market, information security specialists will need to re-evaluate the public version of the product. They will be required to conduct an independent audit and verify whether the necessary technical improvements have been implemented to ensure the level of protection claimed by the developers.

The strategic importance of launching the new application is also greatly amplified by the management's recent decision to completely close the X Communities section within the main platform. This step was dictated by critically low levels of organic engagement among regular users and an uncontrolled flow of spam. XChat is positioned as a new target platform for these communities, where members can transfer their discussions after the section's closure. It is expected that the audience migration will provide the new messenger with a significant initial surge in installations. According to lead platform designer Benji Taylor, the application's functionality will be actively expanded, as the current release represents only the very beginning of the company's large-scale work in the messaging segment.
