Meta launches Muse Spark and abandons open Llama releases for a closed flagship

Meta unveiled Muse Spark, a closed — weight multimodal reasoning model that will power Meta AI across apps and replace the company’s prior Llama — focused, more open strategy; access is via Meta-hosted services rather than downloadable weights.

Meta has introduced Muse Spark as its new flagship AI model and signaled a clear break from the more open Llama releases: Muse Spark’s model weights are closed and Meta says the model is accessible only through Meta AI rather than as a downloadable release. The change matters because it moves Meta from a self‑hosted, developer‑friendly approach to a hosted, proprietary distribution that will shape how products and builders use the company’s models.

Muse Spark is a multimodal reasoning model designed to handle text and images, select external tools such as image generation or web search, and run sub‑agents to complete tasks. Meta describes three operational modes — Instant for quick replies, Thinking for standard reasoning, and Contemplating, which runs multiple agents’ reasoning in parallel — giving the company flexibility across fast interactions and deeper agentic workflows. Meta says Muse Spark was trained with more than 1,000 physicians to improve health reasoning and that it can perform practical tasks such as estimating calories from an image. Those claims position the model for medical‑adjacent assistance and everyday multimodal use cases within Meta’s consumer products.

On public model charts, Muse Spark is listed in the frontier tier. Zapier’s coverage cites an Artificial Analysis ranking that places Muse Spark seventh — behind models such as GPT‑5.5/5.4, Claude Opus 4.7 (max), Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview and Kimi K2.6 — and ahead of Claude Sonnet 4.6 (max) and DeepSeek V4 Pro (max). The reporting also notes that Llama 4 has dropped off the top charts for nearly a year.

Rollout is currently limited and product‑focused. Muse Spark already powers the Meta AI app and in‑product assistants in WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and it is available via a dedicated web app in the U.S. Meta is running a private API preview for select users and says it plans hardware integrations such as Meta Ray — Bans soon, but broader API availability and timelines remain unclear.

Zapier frames Muse Spark as Meta’s response to competitive pressure from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini and points to rising rivals from Chinese open models such as DeepSeek and Kimi (with mentions of Qwen). That competitive context helps explain why Meta shifted away from publicly downloadable Llama weights toward a hosted, proprietary model.

The implications for builders and integrators are concrete: closed weights mean there will be no Hugging Face downloads and no local self‑hosting, so projects that relied on Llama family self‑hosting will need to migrate to hosted endpoints or choose different models. Meta has not announced a Muse Spark coding tool or desktop app, so agentic coding and workflow tooling available from other vendors are not yet part of Meta’s announced stack.
