Microsoft invests A$25 billion in AI and cybersecurity development in Australia by 2029

Microsoft announced the largest investment in its history in Australia — A$25 billion (USD 18 billion) by the end of 2029.

The American corporation Microsoft announced its largest ever investment in Australia, committing A$25 billion (approximately USD 18 billion) by the end of 2029. This was announced by Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella jointly with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The funds will be directed towards significantly expanding the country's digital infrastructure, strengthening national cyber defense, and implementing large-scale workforce skills development programs.

As part of the announced initiatives, Microsoft plans to significantly increase the capacity of its Azure AI supercomputing and cloud infrastructures in Australia. The company will deepen its collaboration with the Australian Institute for AI Safety, extend the Microsoft-ASD Cyber-Shield program to additional government agencies, and strengthen engagement with the Department of Home Affairs on national resilience issues. Special attention is given to human capital development: by 2028, three million Australians will be trained in in-demand artificial intelligence skills.

These investments are designed to help transform Australia into a global leader in AI innovation, ensuring safe and inclusive technology adoption across all sectors of the economy in line with the government's National AI Plan. The new investments logically follow previously made investments of A$5 billion (in October 2023), thanks to which Microsoft has already increased its data center presence in Australia to 29 facilities across three Azure regions and trained over one million citizens in digital and AI skills.

By the end of 2029, Microsoft's existing cloud presence in Australia is expected to increase by over 140%. According to new analytical data from EY-Parthenon, Microsoft's operations contributed $36 billion to the Australian economy in the 2025 fiscal year and supported the creation of the equivalent of over 186,000 full-time jobs, underscoring the company's long-term economic impact. The A$25 billion investment in the country's digital infrastructure will ensure the deployment of advanced AI processors necessary to support the next generation of innovations, data processing, and application development. This will strengthen domestic cloud and AI capabilities, enhance their resilience and security, which is critically important for the confident operation of Australian organizations.

These investments are solidified by a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian government. This document confirms Microsoft's commitment to the government's expectations for data center and AI infrastructure developers, based on five national priorities, and demonstrates the strategic partnership between the technology giant and the Australian government in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
