The collaboration between NABTU and Microsoft aims to create accessible courses on digital skills and career opportunities for skilled trades workers in North America.
On April 21, 2026, NABTU (North America's Building Trades Unions) and Microsoft announced an expansion of their partnership aimed at workforce development in an artificial intelligence-driven economy. The initiative has already trained 1,500 instructors in hands-on training centers and now offers free courses on the fundamentals of AI and certifications.
As part of the new project, NABTU and Microsoft are partnering with the nonprofit organization TradesFutures to raise awareness about careers in the skilled trades. This collaboration will integrate AI training into the internship preparation program, connecting individuals with internship opportunities in building trades unions across 34 states.
This initiative also supports Microsoft's strategy to create an inclusive AI infrastructure. Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of the company, noted that workers involved in building the physical infrastructure of AI, such as electricians and plumbers, should have access to the new opportunities provided by this economy.
The program covers not only instructors and leaders but also interns and professionals from various skilled trades. Participants who successfully complete the course receive an industry-recognized AI literacy certification. NABTU President Sean McGarvey, speaking at the annual legislative conference, emphasized the importance of training and scaling in the workforce development model designed to keep professionals at the forefront.
