In honor of Earth Day, NVIDIA announced five key projects utilizing AI and accelerated computing to advance climate research, species preservation, and disaster monitoring.

Ahead of Earth Day 2026, NVIDIA announced five key projects demonstrating the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and accelerated computing for planet protection. The initiatives cover climate research, biodiversity preservation, disaster monitoring, and waste recycling, significantly accelerating traditionally labor-intensive environmental tasks. Central to this is the NVIDIA Earth-2 project, which provides open AI models, libraries, and frameworks for comprehensive weather forecasting. This platform optimizes every stage โ€” from processing raw data to generating 15-day global forecasts and local storm warnings. Specifically, the Earth-2 Nowcasting model uses generative AI to create kilometer-resolution forecasts for up to six hours, delivering results in a matter of minutes.

Additionally, the Earth-2 platform introduces the Global Data Assimilation model, developed in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and MITRE. This model, already available for download on Earth2Studio and Hugging Face, can transform raw meteorological data into detailed global snapshots of the current atmospheric state, including temperature, wind speed, humidity, and pressure readings, in minutes on a single GPU.

In wildlife conservation, AI significantly improves orangutan population monitoring. While traditional nest counting involved slow progress through difficult-to-access forests at about 1 kilometer per hour, drones can survey up to 18 kilometers in the same amount of time. However, manual analysis of drone-captured images previously required up to 30 hours of work for every hour of flight. Now, GPU-accelerated deep analysis allows an AI model to process 1800 images in less than five minutes on a single GPU, substantially reducing time and financial costs.

Professor Paul Fergus from Liverpool John Moores University particularly noted this progress. Thus, advancements in AI and accelerated computing help overcome large-scale and complex environmental challenges, providing researchers and conservation organizations with new opportunities. These technologies not only significantly save time and resources but also guarantee high data accuracy, which is critically important for making informed decisions. Other NVIDIA AI initiatives include projects for sorting recyclables using AI and robotics from AMP, the development of early tsunami warning systems, and the analysis of satellite Earth data on the Planet platform.
