On 19 May, a collaboration led by WhaleSpotter of Somerville, Massachusetts activated an AI-based thermal camera system on Angel Island to detect gray whale spouts and alert maritime authorities. The system is intended to reduce collisions by providing near-real-time, validated warnings to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic Service so ships can slow or change course when whales are nearby.
