OpenAI CEO apologizes to Tumbler Ridge over missed ChatGPT warning

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has apologized to residents of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, after the company acknowledged that it did not alert law enforcement about a ChatGPT account later linked by police to the suspect in a mass shooting. According to reporting cited in the article, OpenAI had flagged and banned the account in June 2025 after violent prompts, but the warning was not passed to authorities until after the attack.

As previously reported by the Wall Street Journal, long before the situation escalated into a real tragedy, the neural network's protective algorithms detected dangerous user behavior. Back in June 2025, OpenAI moderators flagged and permanently blocked a ChatGPT account belonging to Jesse Van Rootselaar. The reason for the blocking was that the young man actively used artificial intelligence to describe and generate detailed scenarios related to armed violence. A discussion unfolded within the company about whether to hand over information about this incident to the police. Nevertheless, employees decided not to do so.

Sam Altman's official apology was first published in the local newspaper Tumbler RidgeLines. In his address, the OpenAI CEO explained that he had previously discussed the details of the incident with Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakovka and British Columbia Premier David Eby. The parties reached mutual agreement that a public apology was absolutely necessary, but publication had to be postponed to allow the community time to grieve and respect the feelings of the affected families. In the letter itself, Altman stated that he deeply regretted that law enforcement did not receive a warning about the account blocked in June.

This tragic incident forced OpenAI to fundamentally review its internal security regulations. The company has already officially announced a process of improving protective protocols and implementing more flexible criteria that will determine the necessity and timing of sharing information about suspicious accounts with law enforcement. Furthermore, the tech giant has begun establishing a system of direct contacts with Canadian law enforcement agencies for prompt data exchange in the future. Sam Altman also added that going forward, his company's focus will be on continuous collaboration with governments at all levels to jointly ensure that such situations cannot be repeated.

The reaction from officials to OpenAI's admission was quite severe and demonstrated the depth of the corporate responsibility issue in the artificial intelligence industry. British Columbia Premier David Eby commented on the OpenAI CEO's address on his social media page on X, noting that while the apologies were necessary, they are utterly insufficient given the devastation brought upon the families of Tumbler Ridge residents. This precedent has already transcended a local incident: Canadian government officials have officially confirmed that they are currently considering the introduction of new regulations and rules governing artificial intelligence.
