OpenAI updates Codex to compete with Anthropic: new features and capabilities.

OpenAI has introduced a new version of Codex with improvements, including background operation on computers and a new interface for web applications, to compete with Anthropic's Claude Code tool.

In recent weeks, competition between OpenAI and Anthropic, related to the creation of tools for automating programming, has intensified. Anthropic has managed to attract the attention of companies with its Claude Code tool, but OpenAI is not willing to concede. At the latest event, the company announced a significant update to the Codex platform, which includes many new features.

One of the most impressive innovations is Codex's ability to work in the background. It can now open applications on the computer and perform actions with the cursor, allowing users to work with other programs simultaneously. OpenAI emphasizes that Codex has become not just a tool, but an assistant that can handle auxiliary tasks, such as application testing.

In addition to similar functions as Claude Code, Codex has also received new tools, including a built-in browser. This feature expands its application in web development and game development. OpenAI plans to further develop this capability for deeper interaction with web applications.

Moreover, the updated Codex has introduced a 'memory' feature that allows it to remember previous work sessions and create interaction contexts. This innovation is expected to enhance the efficiency of working with the tool. The ability to generate images has also been added, which will help users create concepts and visual materials for business.

Against the backdrop of these updates, OpenAI announced 111 integrations with applications such as CodeRabbit and Gitlab Issues, which will allow Codex to automate routine tasks, including analyzing Slack channels and Google Calendar to compile task lists. The updated pricing model, based on pay-as-you-go, is also aimed at corporate users of ChatGPT.
