OpenAI turns ChatGPT Projects into a workspace

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called "Projects," which transforms the standard ChatGPT interface into a workspace. This innovation allows users to organize their tasks into dedicated spaces with shared context and history. Within a single project, disparate chats, uploaded documents, and system instructions can now be combined. Thanks to this approach, there's no longer a need to re-enter basic information every time a new conversation begins, which fundamentally changes the logic of interaction with the neural network when working on long-term tasks.

The use of a project structure solves the problem of context loss that users often encounter when studying a subject over a long period. Instead of distributing materials across unrelated dialogues, researchers, writers, and analysts can store all drafts, source data, and reference materials in a single location. The neural network gains the ability to draw upon a stable knowledge base, allowing it to generate more consistent results over time. Developers note that a regular chat is still suitable for quick, one-off tasks, but for multi-stage planning, text writing, or personal task management, the project format is more effective.

A key systemic feature of the update is the isolated memory option (project-only memory). When this setting is selected, the AI strictly limits the working context to the confines of a specific project. Within this space, chats can reference each other and use shared files, but they remain completely isolated from all other conversations in the user's account. Such an architecture ensures clear boundaries between different areas of activity, preventing accidental mixing of information from personal inquiries and professional workflows.

Beyond individual use, projects significantly expand the possibilities for collaborative interaction. On supported subscription plans, workspace owners can invite collaborators, granting them synchronous access to shared files, instructions, and conversation history. All participants see updates in real time, which reduces the need for information duplication. While the company has not disclosed the full list of plans supporting collaboration, the official release states that enhanced features are available for ChatGPT Enterprise level clients. Administrators of corporate accounts can centrally manage shared projects across the entire workspace and configure access based on role-based models for different groups.
