OpenAI unveils GPT-5.5: a new step towards creating an AI 'super-app'

On Thursday, OpenAI unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model — GPT-5.5, calling it the "smartest and most intuitive" to date. This algorithm possesses enhanced capabilities across a multitude of areas, which, according to OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman, brings the company closer to creating its own AI "super-app." Brockman emphasized that the new model is a significant step "towards more agentic and intuitive computing," differing from predecessors such as GPT-5.4 by its ability to "think faster and clearer, using fewer tokens." This opens access to advanced AI for a wide range of companies and consumers, aligning with OpenAI's strategic goals.

GPT-5.5 is designed to perform a wide range of tasks: from fundamental corporate functions, such as agentic coding and knowledge work, to more experimental areas, including mathematics and scientific research. The model demonstrates superiority in various benchmarks not only over previous OpenAI versions but also over competing solutions, such as Google's Gemini 3.1 Pro and Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.5. These results confirm its leading position in the AI market.

The creation of a "super-app" — a multi-functional "Swiss Army knife" program — has long been a strategic goal for Greg Brockman and Sam Altman. They plan to integrate ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI browser into a single service, aimed at corporate clients. Notably, a similar concept is actively being discussed by Elon Musk, who aims to transform his X platform (formerly Twitter) into a similar universal product.

OpenAI demonstrates a rapid pace of new model releases: the previous version was introduced just a month ago, and prior to that, releases occurred in December and November. The company's chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, confirmed that this pace will be maintained in the foreseeable future, predicting "significant improvements in the short term and extremely significant ones in the medium term." Mark Chen, OpenAI's Director of Research, added that GPT-5.5 significantly improves performance on computational tasks and shows "significant advances in scientific and mathematical fields." Mia Glaize of OpenAI's technical staff also noted that the new model will have a substantial impact on the company's approach to deploying systems for digital protection, adhering to a "sustainable strategy" in cybersecurity.
