Perplexity has opened its Personal Computer desktop app on macOS to all Mac users, removing earlier Perplexity Max subscriber and waitlist restrictions after an initial limited launch last month. The change lets anyone install the client and run AI agents that can interact with local files, native Mac applications and online services — a move that broadens access to agent — driven automations on personal desktops. for IT teams and developers, it increases the pool of machines and scenarios to evaluate for integration and security.
The Personal Computer app is built to orchestrate tools, files and personal context across a user’s device and the web. Agents can leverage a user’s local data and native apps, connect to services through more than 400 connectors, and coordinate multi — step workflows. Perplexity says the agent runtime operates alongside a secure development environment hosted on the company’s servers, combining device — level access with a cloud — managed execution layer.
Perplexity also supports pairing Personal Computer with its Comet web browser so agents can interact with web-based tools even when a dedicated connector is not available. The client is designed to run autonomously on always — on hardware such as a Mac Mini and supports remote interactions from an iPhone to trigger tasks or approve agent requests. The company notes that an older Mac app will be deprecated in the weeks ahead so engineering focus can shift to the new desktop client.
The rollout arrives amid growing interest in local AI agents popularized by projects such as OpenClaw. Perplexity positions Personal Computer as offering a safer, more controlled desktop environment, contrasting its hybrid approach with deployments that have raised concern over elevated permissions.
