The future of work: rapid changes influenced by AI

The latest report on the future of work from Microsoft explores how artificial intelligence is changing work principles, creating new opportunities and challenges for workers and organizations.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the work environment, which is proving to be more pronounced than in previous reports on the future of work. This year, the focus is on how AI fosters collaboration among workers, rather than just automation and productivity improvement. Organizations that view AI as a partner reap the greatest benefits, although the advantages are not distributed evenly.

Over the past five years, the report notes significant changes in work processes, which are now accelerated by generative AI. This technology actively participates in work tasks, altering approaches to creation, decision-making, and collaboration. Microsoft's data analysis examines the practical experiences of users, rather than just hypothetical trends.

The pace of AI adoption exceeds that of previous technologies, with initial data showing that about 38% of workers in Germany are already using AI at work. However, the level of adoption varies across industries and gender groups, highlighting the risks of uneven usage in terms of productivity and career opportunities.

Perceptions of AI can be viewed in terms of complex and positive effects. Regular studies show that workers using AI are sometimes perceived as less competent, even if their productivity is comparable to those who do not use AI. At the same time, managers using AI are more likely to evaluate work outcomes more objectively.

The future of work is shaped by the choices of individuals and organizations, as well as the joint development of a culture of trust and safety in using new tools. Based on these observations, organizations should focus on involving workers in decision-making processes regarding technology implementation to create a more effective and sustainable work environment.
