Urbasolar has implemented an AI chatbot to enhance biodiversity protection and accelerate the design process of solar plants.
With the growth of renewable energy sources in Europe, solar energy companies need to not only produce clean energy but also protect local ecosystems. Urbasolar, part of the Axpo group, emphasizes that biodiversity protection is a key aspect of designing its solar installations.
Since its founding in 2006, Urbasolar has managed over 750 solar power plants, and the accumulated data on ecology and biodiversity assessments play a crucial role in obtaining permits for new projects. Project managers need to confirm the absence of negative environmental impacts, which requires meticulous work with reports.
Previously, the process of searching for biodiversity information in extensive reports was time-consuming, and project teams had to spend hours on these tasks. Since March 2025, Urbasolar has implemented an AI chatbot based on Microsoft Azure, which provides quick access to necessary ecological data and allows finding answers in just minutes.
The implementation of the chatbot also fosters constructive discussions about the impact of solar installations on nature. Project teams often face biased views, and the chatbot provides links to facts about protected species in existing installations, which enhances the quality of discussions and helps dispel myths.
